How to safely view the Solar Eclipse

By Julia Briggs, Macaroni KID Peoria April 5, 2024

Prepare for an Astronomical Marvel: The Solar Eclipse on April 8th!

Ever gazed at the sun and imagined it completely eclipsed by the moon? Well, mark your calendars for April 8th because you're in for a treat! A total solar eclipse will grace the skies across North America, promising a breathtaking spectacle.

Here's what you and your loved ones need to know to enjoy this extraordinary event safely.

Understanding Solar Eclipses:

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon positions itself between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. During a total eclipse, the moon entirely obscures the sun for a brief period, enveloping the sky in twilight-like darkness. It's an awe-inspiring and rare phenomenon!

The Great North American Eclipse:

This year's eclipse holds particular significance as the path of totality, where the sun will be fully obscured, traverses North America from Mexico through the United States up to Canada.

The eclipse's totality will commence over the South Pacific Ocean and become visible in North America, beginning in Mexico around 11:07 a.m. From there, the path will span across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine before exiting North America at 5:16 p.m.

Here in Peoria, IL we can expect to see the sun 94% eclipsed with the max view at 2:03 pm.

Prioritize Safety!

Directly viewing the sun, even momentarily, can cause severe eye damage. The cardinal rule: never observe the eclipse without proper eye protection. Opt for certified eclipse glasses featuring specialized filters designed to shield your eyes from harmful solar rays. Regular sunglasses or viewing through a camera lens are inadequate and unsafe!
