St. Patrick's Day commemorates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who is credited with bringing Christianity to the country. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping and returning to his family, he became a priest and later returned to Ireland as a missionary. It is said that he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish pagans. Over time, March 17, believed to be the date of his death, became a day of religious feast and celebration. Eventually St. Patty’s has also morphed into into a secular holiday known for parades, wearing green, and celebrating Irish culture around the world.
