Peoria Staycation --- All your summer fun is HERE!

June 17, 2022

We often hear people say, “There’s nothing to do in Peoria!” Well, we are here to tell you all the reasons that is not true! With gas and food prices where they are today, we are pleased to highlight how you can have a Summer of Fun with the Peoria Park District, while staying right here in Central Illinois.

This summer, we are happy to announce we have two public swimming pools open every week day, weather permitting. Gwynn Family Aquatic Center is open Monday-Friday from 12-5pm and Proctor Recreation Center from 12-4pm on Monday-Friday. We also have two splashpads open daily from 11am-7pm at Proctor Recreation Center and Logan Recreation Center.

We are proud to offer a wide variety of experiences and and fun traveling to a park near you. Enjoy a glass of Shade Tree Shandy at Parks on Tap, brewed for us by our friends from Industry Brewing. The Traveling TapHouse will be making a stop near you this summer with great music and delicious food from local vendors. Some stops also include our mobile recreation, PPD on the Go! and Movies in the Park, bringing your favorite family-friendly flick to the big screen. It will be fun for the whole family and we hope to see you at a stop or two!

Kick-off your weekend right by joining us for a morning session of Yoga in the Park every Saturday at 8am taught by RiverPlex Recreation & Wellness Center instructors! This free summer activity will have you exploring the sounds and sights of our parks throughout the Peoria Park District! This is a great introductory lesson, good for all ages and abilities; just bring your mat or towel!

As always, our parks will continue to be the backdrop for your summer memories: trips to Peoria Zoo to feed the giraffes; digging for dinosaur fossils in the Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum; skating on the ice at Owens Ice Center; blazing the trails at Forest Park Nature Center; or rocking away to your favorite band on the RiverFront.

For more structured play, register for week of summer camp at Proctor Recreation Center, Open Art Studio at the Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum, Preschool Party at Luthy Botanical Garden or a guided hike at Forest Park Nature Center. You can also sign up for a youth or adult sports league, or swimming, tennis, golf, soccer, dance or skating lessons. We have a ton of options for all ages, abilities and schedules!

As you can see, the Peoria Park District has a pretty great summer story to tell and one that can fill your days with fun, exploration and memories. With all of that fun, don’t forget that our parks and trails are the foundation for our work and are available from dawn to dusk every single day.  With nearly 9,000 acres of land held in public stewardship and more than 52 miles of trails, the Peoria Park District is a valued resource for the community and one that will leave you to saying “There’s so much to do in Peoria!”
