Perched proudly on the north bank of the Illinois River, Buffalo Rock State Park offers a captivating glimpse into history and nature. Once an island in the river, the park's bluff now provides a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. Situated just three miles west of Ottawa in LaSalle County, this 298-acre gem has long been a beloved spot for picnickers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Buffalo Rock holds a significant place in history as it was once home to the Illinois Indians. In 1673, French explorer Louis Jolliet and Jesuit missionary Father Jacques Marquette journeyed up the Illinois River, encountering the Illinois Tribe in this very area. Sadly, the Illinois Tribe faced adversity and conflict, ultimately succumbing to prolonged warfare with the formidable Iroquois.
