🌊 Family Day Trip Idea: Exploring the Illinois River Road

Peoria - Oglesby (Kid-Friendly Itinerary)

April 4, 2026

Lately, my kids and I have been learning more about Illinois—how our area was settled, why people were drawn here, and just how important our little slice along the river really was.

And honestly? It made me appreciate where we live even more. 💛

The Illinois River wasn’t just beautiful—it was essential. With fertile soil and access to travel and trade, it became a place people wanted to be.

So I thought… why not explore it like they once did (just with coffee and snacks 😅)?

Let me share a family-friendly day trip (heading north) that is equal parts fun, relaxing, and memory-making.

☕ First Stop: Fuel Up at One World

Start your morning at One World Cafefor breakfast and coffee.

Trust me—you’ll want everyone fed and caffeinated before hitting the road.

🚗 Hit the Road: North on the Illinois River Road

From there, head north along the Illinois River Road Scenic Byway, one of the best scenic drives in Illinois.

Roll the windows down, turn on some music, and enjoy the ride—this is part of the adventure. Make sure when you can, you hop on toRiver Beach Drive.

🛝 Stop #1: Chillicothe Adventure

Your first stop is Chillicothe.

Head to Shore Acres Park to check out the brand new playground—perfect for letting kids get their wiggles out.

While you’re there:

  • Walk down along the river
  • Look for shells or cool rocks
  • Keep an eye out for birds and fish
  • Take in all the smells… (hopefully not dead fish 😅)

Before leaving town, make sure to stop by Eagle Landing for a beautiful overlook.

👉 Mom PSA: If you need a little extra boost, swing by Nat’s Place for coffee ☕

If you’ve got time, stroll through historic downtown for a little browsing!

🍎 Stop #2: Henry

Next up, head to Henry.

If it’s open, stop by Beebe’s Produce and grab a fresh snack for the road (this is such a fun, simple stop kids love).

Then head over to Waterworks Park:

  • Let the kids play
  • Enjoy another gorgeous river view
  • Take a breather before the next leg

🍔 Lunch Stop: Oglesby

By now… everyone’s hungry.

Make your way to Oglesby and grab lunch at the iconic
👉 The Rootbeer Stand

It’s classic, casual, and exactly what a day trip calls for.

🥾 Main Event: Matthiessen State Park

Time for the highlight of the day—Matthiessen State Park.

Spend your afternoon exploring nearly 2,000 acres of:

  • Prairie and forest
  • Sandstone canyons (called “dells”)
  • Waterfalls and ravines
  • Trails perfect for families

The Vermilion River cuts through the park, creating stunning natural views—and if you look closely, you’ll even see “mineral paintings” in the rock walls (nature is wild like that!).

👉 This is where you slow down, explore, and let kids just be kids.

💛 One Last Thought…

This is just one version of a day (or weekend) along the
Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway.

There are SO many ways to mix and match stops depending on your family, your time, and your energy level. Whether you’re planning a full weekend getaway or just need a new idea for a Saturday…

👉 You truly won’t run out of things to explore.

Take a peek at the byway map, follow your curiosity, and see what you discover along the way. Because sometimes the best family memories start with something as simple as:
“Let’s go for a drive.” 🛣️
