Extracurricular Activities: At What Age Should Kids Start?

By Submitted by: Jennifer Hand, Dance Program Director, Jump Start Plus September 20, 2024

Many parents are eager to get their kids involved in extracurricular activities. It’s easy to go overboard. But it can also be difficult to tell when kids should start extracurricular activities. Is there such a thing as too young, or is it better to get them going right away?

You don’t want to push your kids into something too soon, before they’re ready, only to scare them off completely. But you also don’t want to wait so long that your kids miss out on the important developmental milestone benefits.  So how do you know when to begin?

There is no set age for children to start extracurriculars.  Benefits from play based programs can be seen in children as young as several months old that participate in parent/child activities and continue through preschool ages as children develop independence, interests and social abilities.

Extracurricular activities for preschoolers have so many benefits, the most universal of these experiences is providing a sense of belonging to a group. This is important for all of us, but especially for our children who are growing and always developing their sense of self in the world.

When children come together for a specific purpose, whether that be for sport, dance, gymnastics, music, or any other guided activity, they build an awareness of a shared skill set. This awareness helps them relate and connect with others. It provides instant commonality and community with another.

These fun organized activities outside of the daily norm offer children the ability to focus on learning something they specifically enjoy, and thereby have the opportunity to meet other kids that share similar interests. It can allow them to develop compassion, empathy, and inspiration from those that they do not get to interact with on a daily basis.

Outside activities can provide children a safe place to be themselves, to be introduced to various authority figures, and to have fun challenges placed on them with which they ordinarily would not be exposed. This can enrich their lives and provide a place where self-expression and confidence can flourish.

Activity centers where children are welcomed, appreciated, and encouraged to grow to their best potential are always worth it! We are so lucky to have so many options in the Peoria!  Have fun exploring and finding the best fit for your children’s interests!
