The Power of Play - RSVP for "Old-Fashioned" Play Day

By Sponsored by Peoria Academy April 18, 2019

There has been a great deal of research around play-based learning and its positive effects in the early childhood years. Parents and teachers have questions. Should we just let children play? Are they actually learning anything?

In my years as a classroom teacher, I can say that setting up a classroom environment that encourages purposeful play enhances children’s social/emotional, cognitive and physical growth. Children need to be provided with developmentally appropriate activities that allow them to use problem-solving skills through self-initiation and teacher guidance. I’ve concluded that the question is no longer, “is play what my child needs,” but rather, “what kind of play does my child need?”

As an early childhood teacher for over 10 years, I have seen the benefits of play-based learning first hand. In the classroom, many important life-skills and academic skills can be learned during play time. When children play in small groups, they are working together, sharing, taking turns, problem-solving, establishing friendships, and building confidence. Play also helps their brains to develop and for their language and communication skills to be enhanced. Their fine and gross motor skills are also being refined. This isn’t to say that sitting down at desks and doing pencil and paperwork is not important. Having a good balance of purposeful play and sit down work is important.

If you would like a chance to see what play-based learning looks like, bring a friend and come join us at Peoria Academy on May 4th from 10-12 for a play-based activity day. Students will get to do activities from the past like making butter, doing old-fashion chores, playing old-fashion games, gardening, making kites, and more! Our early childhood teachers will be leading these engaging hands-on activities for children ages 3-5, and our event is free! Feel free to invite a friend.  You can RSVP by calling 692-750 so that we have enough materials for you when you arrive.
